Tennessee residents who have ever been arrested or convicted of a crime have more than simply serving a sentence to be concerned about. Even once all fines are paid, jail time served and other obligations met, the reality is that a criminal record can still pose a problem in a person’s life. A poll reported in early 2015 and conducted by the New York Times, CBS News and the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that over one-third of males between the ages of 25 and 54 who are out of work have criminal records of some sort. That does not bode well when it comes time to get a job and re-establish one’s life.

The chances of a job offer can greatly diminish when this happens. So what can a job seeker with a criminal record do in order to be able to get employment and earn a living?

When looking at companies to apply with, applicants should learn what information they seek in background checks. For example, some employers only consider felonies or actual convictions but for others, even an arrest or a misdemeanor conviction could be a problem. Being prepared can go a long way toward helping the process.
