Tennessee state trooper charged with domestic assault, resigns

According to news reports, a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper has quit his law enforcement position after his recent arrest. The former officer was charged with domestic assault and aggravated assault after an incident at his home.

According to a police affidavit, a utility worker noticed the former officer’s wife crying outside the couple’s home about 300 miles west of Chattanooga in Tipton County. The utility employee then called the local sheriff’s department, a news report stated.

Responding Tipton County sheriff’s deputies reported that when they arrived the former state trooper began yelling at them, telling them to “get off his property.” He is also alleged to have shut the house’s front door on a deputy’s hand, resulting in “minor bruising,” the news report stated.

The man’s wife reportedly told officers that her husband had been yelling at her.

At some point, deputies went inside the couple’s home and performed a search. They said they found marijuana and paraphernalia inside a kitchen cabinet.

The former trooper was also charged with marijuana possession.

Though he was initially suspended by the Highway Patrol, he has since resigned his position after two years as a trooper.

A domestic assault charge is either a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year behind bars upon conviction, or a Class B misdemeanor that can mean up to six months in jail.

A conviction for a Class C felony aggravated assault could mean up to 15 years in prison, while a Class D aggravated assault felony can mean between two and 12 years in prison.

If you face any of these charges, contact a Chattanooga criminal defense attorney who will protect your rights at every step of the legal process.
