Man arrested in Chattanooga faces 21 sex crimes charges

A man was recently arrested here by Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputies who were assisted by Chattanooga police officers and FBI agents. The suspect was wanted in Memphis on nearly two dozen sex crimes charges, officials said.

The suspect was taken into custody on Dayton Boulevard on charges that include seven counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, statutory rape by an authority figure, aggravated statutory rape and continuous sexual abuse of a minor.

Authorities said he has also been charged with 10 counts of soliciting the sexual exploitation of a minor by electronic means. He was taken back to Memphis after his arrest on the 21 charges.

According to Tennessee law, aggravated statutory rape involves sexual penetration of someone 13 to 17 years old in which the defendant is at least a decade older.

Statutory rape by an authority figure also involves someone 13 to 17 years old. In these cases, the defendant must hold a position of trust or supervision or have parental or custodial authority, and then use their position of authority to have sex with the victim.

Aggravated statutory rape is a Class D felony, which can mean that upon conviction, a person can be sentenced to from 2 to 12 years in prison and fined up to $5,000. A judge can also require registration as a sex offender.

Mandated registration has a profound impact on a person’s life, restricting places where they can live and work, as well as requiring regular check-ins with officials who will track activities, travels, etc.

Those accused of these types of crimes should speak to an attorney experienced in sex crimes defense before speaking with investigators or prosecutors.
