The cost of a DUI in Tennessee

On Behalf of | Jul 4, 2017 | Drunk Driving

With the long Fourth of July holiday weekend just around the corner, Tennessee drivers everywhere will want to pay special attention to their transportation plans to and from celebration events and gettogethers. While it may feel inconvenient or expensive to pay for a ride, it may be worth a moment to consider the many ways in which a conviction for driving under the influence may hit a person financially.

According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, a person might end up feeling like they are opening their wallet at every turn even after a first DUI offense. For starters, they may have to post bail in order to get out of jail. When arrested their vehicle may be towed and they will be on the hook for paying the towing company to get it back. A revoked driver’s license generally requires some payment in order to be reinstated.

For people who have prior DUI offenses on record, they may have to install and use an ignition interlock device. All costs from installation to leasing to maintenance must be paid by the driver. Court fees may also be due at different points in the defense process. If an arrest was connected with an accident that resulted in injury or damage, financial restitution to those involved may be ordered as well.

Many public awareness materials about drunk driving during a holiday are often seen at this time as the U.S. Department of Transportation makes these available to municipalities, police departments and more in order to help curb drinking and driving and to highlight their increased enforcement at this time. Seeing these may help people to consider the risks before they act.
