If you have been charged with a sex crime in Tennessee, you will no doubt have many questions about how the criminal defense process works. You will also likely want to know what consequences you may face if you are ultimately convicted of a sex crime. The specific penalties may vary from case to case but you may be required to register as a sex offender.
The Tennessee Code explains the range of information collected by the sex offender registry program. This includes details about any physical residence such as the address and whether any minors live in the residence. Any name or alias used along with identifiers or demographic data like Social Security number, date of birth, race, gender and vehicle registration data must also be provided. The registry collects specific information about the conviction for which you have been convicted as well as information about the alleged victim or victims involved. If you have a job or are enrolled in any school, you must list contact information for the employer or the school.
Tennessee collects fingerprints and DNA samples from all registered sex offenders. If your conviction was for a non-violent offense, you will need to renew your registration annually. If your conviction was for a violent offense, you will need to renew your registration four times a year. People who must participate in the registry program are required to pay some of the administrative costs associated with the registration.
